If you’re spending hours (or days) on your feet chasing big trail goals, comfort isn’t optional…..it’s a must. We’ve tested a ton of options and narrowed it down to the best cushioned trail running shoes.

Best Cushioned Trail Running Shoes

Don’t let the thick soles fool you, these picks aren’t just about softness. They earned their spot for fit, durability, and the kind of all-day support that keeps your feet happy deep into the miles.

We’ve already broken down our top trail running shoes, but if you’re looking for max comfort without sacrificing performance, this is where to start. Because once your feet start to hurt or blisters show up, the fun ends fast.

A little extra cushion? Totally worth it.

9 Best Cushioned Trail Running Shoes

These trail shoes are built to handle whatever the terrain throws at you (mud, rocks, steep climbs), you name it. They’ve got the traction, stability, and durability you need, but there’s one thing that sets them apart: more cushion underfoot, which means they tend to be a bit heavier than your typical trail shoe.

Now, we get it, some trail runners want to feel every rock and root. But when you’re deep into an ultra, that plush cushioning starts to feel like a well-earned treat.

Here’s a look at some of the cushiest trail shoes our team has been loving in 2025.

Most Cushioned Trail Shoe –  Salomon S/Lab Ultra Glide

The Ultra Glide promises comfort over long distances on rugged terrain, featuring SalomonFOAM+ AND SalomonFOAM cushioning (that’s right, double the foam!), a 6mm drop, and 4mm lugs.

Salomon first layered their SalomonFOAM, a lightweight EVA foam, on the Relieve Sphere outsole to help deter foot fatigue during long runs. Then, they layered their SalomonFOAM+ (a mix of PEBA and EVA) to create a nice, bouncy footbed. The double-layered foam makes a noticeable difference!

The maximum cushion is immediately noticeable. These are downright comfortable with a little bounce!

Salomon S:LAB Ultra Glide ReviewEven on more technical terrain, the cushioning wasn’t overwhelming. They were still responsive and stable, even on rocky downhills. The bounciness provided just enough spring to make me feel quick on my feet, not heavy or weighed down.

The added cushion will likely appeal to mid- and back-of-the-pack runners seeking extra comfort for longer runs. However, we’ve seen a few professional runners wear the Ultra Glide on easy, long-run days, and a few races. It’s still a new shoe, so we bet we’ll see more of it in the coming trail race season.

Most Versatile Cushioned Trail Shoe – Brooks Caldera

When you first look at these shoes, your eyes are probably immediately drawn to the amount of foam. But don’t worry, this doesn’t translate to the Caldera 8 being a super squishy ride.

The DNA Loft v3 foam brought the cushion but was still firm and bouncy enough to feel connected to the trail.  With all the cushion, the Caldera 8 was still stabilizing, flexible, and responsive enough to handle the most poorly chosen line through roots and rocks.Brooks Caldera 8 ReviewThe Caldera 8 took me through miles and miles of rolling hills on moderate trails. With the ample cushioning, we didn’t notice a single rock or root.

This is a perfect match for trail and ultra runners looking for a little extra cushion while spending lots of time on the trails. Dare we say an ultra run shoe?

Best Stability Cushioned Trail Shoe – Merrell Adapt Matryx

The Merrell MTL Adapt Matryx might surprise you, in the best way. It’s a well-balanced trail shoe that delivers comfort, traction, and durability without overcomplicating things.

If you’re logging longer miles or dealing with lingering foot issues, the extra cushion feels like a gift. And the combo of the Matryx® upper, nitrogen-infused FloatPro™ foam, and Vibram® Megagrip® outsole means this shoe is built to handle everything from rocky climbs to slick singletrack.Merrell MTL Adapt Matryx ReviewWhat makes it stand out is how it blends softness with stability. Some cushioned trail shoes can feel a little too squishy, but this one keeps you connected to the ground without beating up your feet.

It’s also a great alternative to plated shoes on race day if you want something responsive without the stiffness.

Merrell may not be the first brand that comes to mind for trail running, but the MTL Adapt Matryx might change that. It’s proof they’re not just making hiking boots anymore.

Best Zero Drop Cushioned Trail Shoe – Altra Olympus

When Altra says max cushion, they mean it. This trail shoe is a favorite among long-distance hikers and ultra runners who want extra comfort on big mileage days.

It’s also going to be a winner for some of our heavier runners, who find that a little more cushion does indeed just feel good on the joints.

Like all Altras, you get the roomy FootShape toe box. We’re still a little torn on it, but there’s no denying it gives your toes space to spread out and lets your big toe drive more power. The traction is amazing on the shoe! No slipping on the wet/slick granite and great traction in the mud.  The Vibram® Megagrip absolutely does its job, alongside an updated lug pattern.

This is absolutely a trail shoe. You don’t want to wear down those amazing lugs with road running.

Best for Road to Trail – New Balance Hierro

We’re sure you can tell from looking at this shoe that there’s going to be a little more oomph feel underfoot. We don’t hate having a little extra cushion, especially after spending long hours on the trail; your feet may actually thank you.

This shoe is great for the runner who desires extra cushion but with a stiffer feel underfoot. If you’re a heavier runner, the Hierro v9 is going to be a perfect trail shoe that is going to support and keep you comfortable through many miles. The New Balance Hierro v9 will provide a stable yet comfortable run for easy trail days with nice protection underfoot.

  • Weight: 10.3 oz Men’s, 8.3 oz Women’s

Best Everyday Cushioned Trail Shoe – Saucony Xodus Ultra 4

The Saucony Xodus Ultra 4 is a max cushioned shoe that doesn’t look like the mega-cushioned shoes, it’s hard to beat for anyone who wants comfort and security in a trail shoe.

The Xodus Ultra 4 adds more of the PWRRUN PB underfoot wrapped with PWRRUN for durability and protection as compared to the Xodus Ultra 3.  The responsive springiness is noticeable as a result of the PWRRUN PB and it’s holding up well through lots of miles on the trails.Saucony Xodus Ultra 4 FoamWe love how this max cushioned shoe does not look bulky or unbalanced.  It’s another one that we would easily recommend to those heading out for a hike.

It’s going to handle well and feel good underfoot for those longer adventures.

It’s an easy shoe to slip into if you are looking for cushion.  There is plenty of padding in all the spots you want padding.  The Xodus Ultra reminded me of the Hoka Speed Goat cushioning with the narrowness and heel cradling of the Saucony Peregrine.

Best Wider Fit Cushioned Trail Shoe – Topo Ultraventure 4

The Topo Ultraventure is a versatile, cushioned shoe that handles both road and trail well, making it a great option for long runs or mixed-terrain adventures.

This is going to be a great shoe for runners with medium to wide feet who want a comfy, secure fit without compromising on cushioning.

The shoe offers a smooth, plush ride for long miles while still providing enough responsiveness when you need to pick up the pace. The Vibram XS Trek EVO outsole that we loved in the Ultraventure 3 remains the same. However, if you need more aggressive traction or are regularly tackling technical, muddy trails, you might want to look elsewhere.

These are not best for those who have narrow feet; there may be too much space for your toes!

Fastest Carbon Plate Cushioned Trail Shoe – Hoka Tecton X

The Tecton X blends speed, cushion, and trail-ready grip with a flexible feel underfoot. The updated parallel carbon plates or “winglets” help your foot move naturally over uneven terrain instead of locking you in.

It’s got that classic carbon setup: two layers of PEBA foam with the plate in between. The top layer is soft and cushy, the bottom firmer for protection and propulsion. It’s lightweight, bouncy, and responsive without being overly soft.Hoka Tecton x3 ReviewOn dirt roads, we could feel the energy return. On rocky climbs, the grip held firm. Even after running through a stream, the drainage worked and blister worries were a non-issue.

This is a great pick for trail runners who want moderate cushion, solid traction, and a little extra speed. Race day or not, it’s a fun ride.

Carbon Plate for Ultra Distances – Hoka Mafate X

We asked a few of HOKA’s long-distance athletes what they reach for after a tough effort or on big mileage days, and the answer was unanimous: the Mafate X. It’s their go-to for recovery trail runs or ultra-distance adventures when keeping the legs happy matters more than speed.

Compared to the Tecton X3, which is light, responsive, and built for speed, the Mafate X feels more grounded. It’s not flashy, but it delivers on durability, grip, and comfort, especially when you’re out there for hours.Hoka Mafate x FitYou’ll feel stable and supported, with enough cushioning to help reduce fatigue over time. It’s not made to be snappy; it’s made to last.

The wider fit is a bonus on long days, giving your feet room to swell without feeling sloppy. If you’ve run in the original Mafate or the Speedgoat, expect this to feel a touch roomier and more forgiving.

Are Cushioned Trail Running Shoes Good for Long Distance?

Yes, most trail shoes are focused on time on feet. Not just because you want to run farther, but because a trail run takes longer!

Ultra runners have a lot of say in new things that brands are creating, which ensures they are focused on providing you with something that can go the distance.

What makes these the best cushioned trail running shoes?

Besides the fact that tons of you have already tested them and said you love them…

  • Fit – you aren’t getting blisters
  • Protection – your feet are beat up from rocks
  • Traction – you feel safe on the trail because your shoe is doing it’s job
  • Waterproof – in some cases above the quick drying nature or the waterproof element was helpful
