The Swiss army knife of shoes is how the Hoka Transport 2 was described to me, and boy is it ever.

Hoka Transport 2 OverviewThis “city to trail” shoe is the second iteration of Hoka’s fan favorite walking shoe with some comfort updates like a higher stack height and softer sock liner.

I have been a fan of Hoka for quite a while now, having run in many different models. So to have a daily shoe that would take me on all my adventures I was very excited.

However, there are a few points that missed their mark for my feet. We will get to that in a bit.

Though they really haven’t deterred me from wearing them non-stop. To the office, long walks, and errands all in the ever changing weather of spring in Minnesota.

These will not be the Hokas you take out for runs. Described to me as the do everything shoe – except train for a marathon – or even a 5k for that matter. And that’s ok, that is not what this shoe is trying to be. We have plenty of other options for that (hello Hoka Bondi vs Clifton).

So, what is this shoe trying to be? And does it achieve this goal? Let’s check it out!

Who is it Good For?

Who is the Hoka Transport 2 a good fit for, let’s break it down by some common categories:
  • Wide Feet: The regular runs a bit on the narrow side for Hoka, but they are available in wide sizing.
  • Walking Workouts: Long walks and hikes will feel great in this.
  • Standing All Day: The stack height will definitely take some pressure off the feet and joints.
  • Daily Wear: I have worn these everyday, everywhere for the past 2 weeks if that is any indication.

If you are in search of a great looking shoe that can take you from the road, to gravel, to light trails. Or perhaps something to travel with when you don’t want to pack a ton. This super versatile Transport 2 is something you should take a look at.

Hoka Transport 2 Overview

When the Hoka Transport 2 arrived, I was so excited at how great they looked. I was expecting something that looked much more clunky and trail-esque. I knew right away these were going to go with everything.

Hoka Transport 2 ReviewWhat makes the shoe particularly useful is its versatility. It transitions easily from urban environments to light trails, handling sidewalks, gravel paths, and park terrain without issue.

The Vibram® EcoStep Recycle outsole provides solid traction for varying conditions, though I would say it is not aggressive enough for technical trails.

This makes it a great companion for travel or mixed-terrain days, but not something you’d rely on for serious hiking. I can really see myself wearing these on the weekends when we take our dog to local parks for walks and hikes.

Hoka Transport 2 OutsoleThe design also leans into eco-friendly practicality. The 100% recycled polyester upper and Cordura® mesh tongue is combined with 100% recycled polyester ghillie webbing for breathable durability.

There is a PFC-free/PFAS-Free water repellency treatment applied, if you want water resistant, opt for the GTX model. I did get to test these out on a rainy walk so I can speak to the water repellency of the upper.

Stylewise, I keep comparing them to a pair of New Balance 327s that I wore all over New York. They both have that stylish neutral upper that can be worn with a athletic dress or jeans. They both have a great grippy outsole.

The Transport 2 has much more structure and support with more technology in materials which I greatly appreciate.

The alabaster colorway is so dreamy. It goes with everything and has a clean classic look to it. I have received so many compliments and comments on these.

Quick Take

Pros

  • Easy slip on with quick toggle lacing
  • Stylish and versatile
  • Higher stack height without the weight

Cons

  • Narrow midfoot
  • Long length in toe box
  • Not a plush cushion

Hoka Transport 2 Fit

Interestingly enough, these fit pretty different than other Hoka shoes I have worn. My regular size fit a tad long and narrow. Never uncomfortably, but noticeable.

Hoka Transport 2 WearI would notice the narrowness more or less based on the socks I was wearing at the time. So if I plan to be on my feet a long time in these, I will have to be mindful to wear thinner socks.

I did also have some heel slippage, probably due to the length. There are holes to heel lock, but you would have to switch to traditional laces. I was not about to do that when the quick toggle laces are one of my favorite features of this shoe.

About that quick toggle – it really is a fun little feature. Now that I have gotten the tightness right where I want it, I have not had to undo and redo them! My foot slips right in without having to mess with anything.

The laces are stretchy cords so they have some give to them. Only concern here is if you lock down too tight, the cord may dig into your upper foot.

Hoka Transport 2 Feel

Considering the higher stack height, I was a little disappointed in the lack of plushness in the cushion. You can certainly feel the stack height. Its comfortable and protective, just firmer than it looks.

Hoka Transport 2 InstepThe elongated back of the heel collar is something I have noticed on recent iterations of Hoka models. I was a fan of it on the Arahi and I am a fan of it here as well.

It makes slipping these on so much easier. And the material is so soft that even though my heel slips with each step, I have had no rubbing issues or sore spots even miles into a walk.

Unfortunately, due to the looseness at the heel, when walking in the rain, I ended up getting my foot more wet than I would have liked. Though, thanks to the upper material, most of my foot stayed dry – just wish it had been all of it.

This upper material is a bit rigid at first but softened up after a few wears. I actually really like the structured feel. Keeps them looking sharp and my feet feel protected. I have heard complaints about the breathability but I did not have any issues myself.

Similar Shoes to the Hoka Transport 2

We’ve tested a few great walking shoes that feel similar, but different based on the brand fit:

  • On Cloudaway: Similar idea of a wear everywhere that slips on with quick toggle lacing, not as cushioned and less stable.
  • Saucony Grid Peak GTX: More rugged looking and can handle more technical hikes.
  • Vessi Stormburst: Much higher heel-toe drop at 12 mm but waterproof and versatile.

While I enjoyed the Transport 2, there were a few things that didn’t work great for me. I am still going to be reaching for them because they are so versatile and great looking. There are just some things that I love Hoka that are missing from this shoe, namely a slightly wider fit and more plush cushioning.

Our Verdict

84%

This is a great go to walking shoe that is going to cover a ton of miles a variety of terrain. We do wish it has just a slightly wider fit and was a bit more plush for those long days standing around.
