Topo decided to throw their hat into the carbon-plated ring, and boy did they come out swinging with the Specter Elite. 
I had similar struggles with this shoe as I did with the Topo Specter 3 because of my stride. Luckily, my husband stepped in to give them a try and help me put the shoe through some testing.
And let me tell you, he is very, very, very picky when it comes to running shoes. So the fact that these completely won him over says a lot. It was also his first-ever run in a carbon-plated shoe (which I know, I know!).
His verdict? He loved them.

Who Is It Good For?

Topo Specter Elite Overview
Now, don’t automatically write off the Specter Elite just because it’s Topo or because you think you don’t need a roomier toe box.
First of all, this is one seriously good-looking shoe. The bright colors and sleek design practically scream “fast”.
But the more you dig into the Specter Elite, the more you realize there’s a lot going on beyond that roomy toe box.
Topo packed this race-day-ready shoe with plenty of technology to help it handle a wide range of paces, whether you’re chasing a PR or just looking for a fun, speedy shoe for your next workout.
So yes, you get that signature Topo fit, but there’s a whole lot more to this shoe than extra space up front.
And to top it all off, coming in at a price tag of $250 isn’t totally breaking the bank like other race day shoes.
So what’s all the fancy technology Topo combined into this shoe? Let’s break it down.

The forefoot was where I struggled most with the Specter Elite. Since I tend to run more on the balls of my feet, I wasn’t really able to take full advantage of the shoe’s rocker-shaped design.
My husband had a completely different experience. As more of a midfoot/heel striker, he really seemed to benefit from the rocker, which helped encourage a smooth, natural rolling stride.
And I think that’s a big part of why those faster paces came so easily for him. The shoe seemed to work with his stride rather than against it, which, when you find a shoe that does that, can make a pretty big difference.
He’s already claimed this as his race day shoe and is excited to keep on wearing it.

Topo Specter Elite Fit
The Specter Elite fits like a dream.
It’s true to size for Topo and has that extra bit of space in the toe box that you come to expect from the brand.
Your toes have space to spread out, without the shoe feeling loose or sloppy.
The shoe might look a little on the heavy side, especially with that thicker-looking upper. But don’t let appearances fool you. For men’s, it comes in at 7.1 oz, and for women’s, 5.6 oz!
The mesh is surprisingly lightweight, with tiny ventilation holes that help keep air moving so your feet don’t feel like they’re stuck in a sauna.
There’s also just the right amount of give in the upper. Your foot can move and breathe naturally, while the shoe still provides enough support to keep you feeling secure when you’re taking tight turns or heading up and down hills.
It’s a really nice balance of roomy, breathable, and secure, which isn’t always easy to find in a carbon-plated shoe.
At first glance, the heel collar and tongue look like they might dig into your ankles, but that’s not the case once you get them on.
They sit really comfortably, and there was no rubbing, hot spots, or blisters during any of the runs.
Honestly, with the racer design, you could barely tell they were there, which is exactly what you want from a race-day shoe.
There’s also a little pillow of padding around the back of the heel that helps keep your foot securely in place and prevents it from sliding upward as you run.
The laces are another thoughtful detail. Unlike some race-day shoes with super-slick laces that seem determined to come undone at the worst moments, these have a slightly more textured, rigid feel that helps them stay tied.
It’s going to be a nice little detail when it’s colder out too. If you’ve ever tried retying your shoes with cold fingers, or while wearing gloves, you know how much you appreciate a lace that just stays put.
Topo Specter Elite Feel
Three words: bouncy, comfortable, and lightweight.
The combination of the carbon fiber plate, RevFoam ATPU Midsole, and the ATPU Insole makes the Topo Specter Elite super duper fun to run in. I’d say the pop is somewhat similar to the Saucony Endorphin Pro 5 but a little firmer underfoot.
There’s plenty of pop with each stride, but it never feels like you’re sacrificing comfort to get it.
And remember, my husband is not someone who typically reaches for the fancier running shoes, mostly because he’s ridiculously picky. SO when he was completely blown away by the Specter Elite, I knew these were going to be a shoe we could recommend for a lot of folks.
In fact, I spent more of our runs trying to keep up with him while he cruised along at faster paces like it was no big deal. Apparently, the shoes were working for him a little too well.
He said the rocker motion helped his foot naturally roll forward on both flats and uphill, something he hadn’t experienced before in a running shoe.
That made picking up the pace feel surprisingly easy for him. The rocker helped maintain his forward stride, while the foam absorbed much of the impact, giving him a smooth, cushioned ride without making the shoe feel sluggish.
No matter your pace, this is a shoe you’ll want to reach for on both workout days and race day. It’s incredibly lightweight, with a wider base that provides extra stability without making the shoe feel bulky or overly noticeable underfoot.
You get the support you want when you’re moving fast, but it still feels light, sleek, and ready to go.
