The Altra Experience Wild 3 offers a joyful, grippy ride on rough, slick, and dirty trails. This shoe blends the best of minimalist footwear – a low drop and natural footshape – with lots of plush padding for higher mileage run.
This daily runner is designed for dirty paths, leaf-covered trails, and rocky scrambles. The Altra Experience 3 offers lots of trail-specific features including a toe-saving bumper to get runners outside.
If you’ve tried and rejected Altra before because the fit was too loose, the Experience family may change your mind. The Experience Wild is more secure than the original Altras, but it still offers a toe box with plenty of wiggle room.
Plus this is in their line up of shoes with a 4mm drop, so you can enjoy that wonderful toe box without needing to be zero drop.
Who is it Good For?
- Wide feet: The Experience Wild offers a more secure fit than the original Altra. But compared to traditional footwear, it still has a wider toebox. Those with wider feet may prefer Altra’s Lone Peak or original fit.
- Technical trails: The MAXTrac outsole reliably grips uneven terrain and a toe bumper protects the toes from rocks and roots.
- Long runs: Unlike most minimalist shoes, these offer a hefty stack height, allowing runners to accumulate mileage while minimizing fatigue.
- Front of the Pack: The Experience Wild 3 has a responsive sole and would be a reliable choice for trail race or technical training runs.
This shoe is great for trail runners looking for a comfortable daily trail runner, or runners who are considering transitioning to minimalist footwear, but don’t want a zero drop.
Altra Experience Wild 3 Overview
The Altra Experience Wild 3 provides a more minimal footwear experience while reducing some of the problems associated with barefoot shoes. This combination makes it a great choice for runners who are curious about minimal shoes.
The Experience Wild offers the best of both traditional and minimalist approaches: it has a low drop and wide toebox but a plush cushion to reduce impact.
The Altra Lone Peaks were my first running shoe romance. Before Altra, I had resigned myself to narrow shoes that pinched my toes or wide shoes that rubbed my heels. Given my appreciation for Altras, I was excited to try the Experience Wild 3.
I ran in the Experience Wild 3 on snow-covered trails, dirt and paved roads, and icy rocks. These shoes are a solid option for runners seeking a foot-shaped running shoe with plenty of cushion.
When updating the Experience Wild, Altra replaced the midsole foam with a foam designed to be more efficient and lighter. This middle layer of foam feels comfortably firm and gives a solid return after each step. It provides a great balance to the plush insole foam.
Our team recently tested the Altra Flow 3 as well and found that in both shoes Altra was going back to a more minimal feel. So if you really liked the cushion in the Experience 2 this is still cushioned, but not nearly as soft. While I really appreciated the ground feel, some folks aren’t going to be as happy.

My Experience Wild’s delicious citrus colorway brightened my mid-winter runs. The sunny colors are cheerful without being obnoxious. The gray upper should maintain its new look despite the inevitable salt, mud, and slime.

Altra Experience Wild 3 Fit
Finally a shoe company that recognizes that foot shape means more than wide and narrow. In the Altra world, foot shape describes the outline of the foot. Altra offers three main FootShapes for their shoes. This variety allows runners to find a shoe that actually fits their foot.
My beloved Lone Peaks have Altra’s original fit – with lots of room in the toebox and looser midfoot.
The Experience family offers Altra’s standard fit. The standard fit still has a wider toe box but a secure midfoot. This is a great option for runners who desire more toe space but are concerned about sliding inside the shoe.
Compared to the Lone Peaks, the Experience fits more snugly. I found them to initially be tight on my wide feet. After I adjusted my lacing and swapped the insole for an orthopedic insole, they were snug but comfortable. Tiny tweaks that can make a shoe that is a near fit a perfect fit.
The Experience Wild has a wider-than-normal toebox but it is more narrow than the Lone Peaks or most of Topo’s shoes. Over the toe box is a rubber bumper – a feature my toes love! This bumper protects the toes from rocks and stumbles. Hopefully, I’ll have fewer bruised toenails with these shoes.
A breathable woven layer covers the midfoot. This conforms comfortably to the foot but it is likely to be a point of failure later. My feet push against the fabric layer. The rubber seems well-adhered to the midlayer but seam too may show wear first.
The tongue is thickly padded and gusseted. The padding prevents pain on the top of the foot from the lacing and makes the shoe more comfortable. Gussets are essential for trail shoes as they reduce debris from entering the shoes.
The flat laces are woven with a retro-reflective thread – a nice touch that increases a runner’s visibility. I appreciate when shoes incorporate safety features like retro reflectors.
The thick padding continues around the heel collar, making a comfortable pillow from my heel. These shoes did not rub or move as I ran.
However, the low foot entrance allowed some debris to enter the shoe. The hook-and-loop GaiterTrap allows runners to easily attach a gaiter to keep their feet clean.
I also love the giant pull strap on the heel collar. These straps make it easy to swap shoes – especially during an ultra or other event where you may need two pairs of shoes.
Altra Experience Wild 3 Feel
The Experience Wild has a moderate to high stack height (32 mm). This stack dampens the ground feel but makes the miles easier to handle. Altra used an insole material similar to the Ortholite insoles. While this foam retains water during wet runs, the outsole of the shoe has tiny perforations for increased breathability and drainage.
I like the insole but ended up swapping it for the SuperFeet Sport insole to correct the shoe’s fit and to alleviate some tenderness under the ball of my foot. When I swapped insoles, the discomfort disappeared, and I was able to complete the mileage necessary to write this review.
The Experience Wild’s outsole has Altra’s proprietary MaxTRAC. This outsole felt grippy on a variety of terrain. Although most of my trails are snowy these days, I’ve had opportunities to test the traction on ice, rocks, and a variety of slush. The traction felt solid underfoot.
For those seeking more rugged paths, the Experience Wild 3+ has a Vibram outsole for only $15 more.
This shoe offers neutral stability and my ankles were working a little more to stay stable, but the overall ride was comfortable and enjoyable. The rocker made transitions smooth, efficient and playful.
In several ways, the Experience Wild 3 reminds me of the Topo MTN Racer 4. Both offer a similar mid-to-high stack height and low drop.
Both shoes also have a thickly cushioned tongue and heel collar. Additionally, while both shoes have a wider toe box than usual, they seemed snug on my feet – especially around the midsoles.
The Vibram sole on the Topo MTN Racer gripped granite reliably, and I liked the shape around its heel collar. But I found the tongue padding too thick for my high-volume feet. This shoe also has a toe bumper, although it’s smaller than the Experience Wild.
I preferred the upper on the Altra Experience Wild 3 and appreciated the added pull tab and retroreflective laces. If this appeals to you, consider upgrading to the Experience Wild 3+ for a Vibram sole.
Both shoes would provide runners with low to mid volume feet many joyful miles on the trails.
Similar Shoes to the Altra Wild 3
We’ve tested a few trail shoes that feel similar, but different based on the brand fit.
- Topo MTN Racer 4 – This shoe has a similar stack (33 mm) and drop (5 mm) with a Vibram sole. The FKT insole sheds water and allows for greater water drainage.
- Altra Lone Peak 9+– An Altra legend, this shoe features Altra’s original foot shape and a Vibram sole. The Lone Peak has a less pronounced rocker, lower stack, height and zero drop.
- Inov8 Trailfly– Another trail shoe with a natural footshape and a low drop. The graphene grip outsole provides plenty of traction. Despite its lower stack height, this shoe has a plush cushion underfoot. The shoe has a looser heel than many.
Our Verdict
This is a tricky rating because some runners are going to love the firmer feel and more ground contact, others are going to wonder where that soft cushioning from the 2 went. It’s a great trail running shoe to tackle most any terrain and provide that wonderful foot shaped toe box.
