When you think about people who train to run marathons, you probably imagine them decked out in latest performance wear.
That’s not the case with Truett Hanes.
He bucked the stereotype and decided to go 26.2 miles in denim!

And guess what? He clocked a time of 2:42:50 in those jeans.
The Springfield, OR native has actually run three marathons in his trusty blue jeans (not to mention one 50K ultramarathon), and recently clocked his personal best time at the Austin Marathon.
He’s not done, and plans to keep running marathons and lowering his time, all while wearing his very unconventional racing gear.

In 2023, he told Canadian Running that he’s not a fan of wearing tights, and figures he’s saving time with his choice of attire.
“Why waste time switching out of them into shorts when I could just wear jeans for everything? I believe that if you have a strong mind and an able body, then you can run just fine no matter the attire.”
The record for running a marathon dressed as a rancher was set by Justin Kurek at the Calgary Marathon in 2017. He clocked an impressive 2:42:17 at the time. Hanes hopes to set a new one this year.
He told Running Magazine that he’s not just doing it for the attention or the fitness, either.
“The Perfect Jean NYC connected with me and had the idea of getting me into the New York City Marathon and raising money for charity while doing so. Then it all clicked for me – I can do two things I love at once: push myself physically in an unconventional way and raise money to help others.”

Since partnering up, the Perfect Jean has donated $15,000 to research for a cure for multiple sclerosis and to support the Miracle Foundation, which works to help orphans in India and the States.
Hanes has always been an athlete, and learned to love endurance sports at his father’s knee.
“I started running as a kid. My dad is an endurance athlete, so he would have my brother and me run with him as far back as I can remember. I ran my first half-marathon when I was eight, and my first marathon when I was 13, with a time of 3:30.”
Hanes says he runs with the twin goals of building muscle and endurance in mind.
“My regular training week, when I’m not training for world records, is seven days a week at the gym and 70 miles a week running. If I’m already in jeans, then I’ll gladly lift or run in them, but if I’m wearing sweatpants, then I’ll work out in sweatpants.”
I know what you’re thinking – there has to be some serious chafing going on, right?
Hanes says no, and he doesn’t wear anything underneath except underwear. On race days, he’ll use Salty Britches anti-chafing cream, though.

He’s currently pushing to get his marathon time below 2:30, and has entered the Boston and Eugene marathons in April, the Huntsville Marathon in September, and the NYC Marathon in November.
In other words, those jeans are going to put in a lot of miles this year!
And the world will definitely be watching.
