Founded in 1987, Rykä is the very first athletic footwear brand to exclusively build sneakers and running shoes for women, and they have launched their most advanced runner yet: the Rykä Windswift LX. Read on to see why I am recommending this shoe to every woman runner I know.

Ryka Windswift LX ReviewFor over 35 years, Rykä has been known for their female focused sneakers. Whether you are an avid walker, gym-goer, runner, or just work on your feet all day long, Rykä has a sneaker for all activities, made with the woman’s foot in mind.

However, the new Windswift LX sneaker is their first running sneaker built with a second goal in mind: performance. From their Q Tech heel to their added Q:Foam forefoot, Rykä designed this sneaker for advanced comfort over long miles while also delivering more energy return on speedier days.

If you’re looking for a running shoe made specifically for women that can offer the ability to perform in all kinds of runs, consider the Ryka Windswift LX.

Fun fact: the People’s Princess herself, Princess Diana, was often spotted wearing her Rykä sneakers on her runs or at off-duty outings.

Our Verdict

90%

We love it when a shoe really surprises us in the best way. Ryka knows women’s feet and has made a daily trainer that’s going to serve so many runners. The fact that it’s extremely versatile and looks great means it’s going to help those folks who only need 1 shoe for a few runs a week and still serve those who have a rotation.

Who Is It Good For?

Who is the Ryka Windswift LX a good fit for? Let’s break it down with some common categories:
  • Wide Feet: The toe box is actually quite roomy, so if you’re used to grabbing a wide size for the toe room, we think you’ll be happy with the standard width. A wide option is also available.
  • Heavier Runners: The additional cushioning, especially at the forefoot, is great for heavier runners.
  • Long Runs: Absolutely. These shoes are designed for comfort yet light enough to keep yours legs feeling fresh over long miles.
  • Front of the Pack: No, but you will love these for long miles, daily training, and some speed workouts. This could be a decent race day option for certain distances and runners.

This shoe is great for someone who wants a do-it-all sneaker in their closet. They really help bridge the gap between everyday comfort and the ability to seamlessly pick up the pace, all while looking really cute with bright colors.

Ryka Windswift LX Overview

The best way to describe the Windswift LX is as if a dependable daily trainer and a light speed work shoe had a baby.

Ryka Windswift LX OverviewI wore these sneakers around the streets of my neighborhood, on the track, and on the treadmill. I found them comfortable on all surfaces.

I tested these sneakers on my easy miles, long runs, for strides, and for intervals, and they were responsive in all stimuli. If you don’t want separate sneakers for different kinds of runs, these can cover all of the bases for you.

Because Rykä makes shoes solely for women, the structure of the shoes is really dialed in for women’s bodies. The Windshift LX uses Rykä’s Q Angle technology by taking into account the inside angle of a women’s quad muscle, which is 3 to 4% greater than in men. According to Rykä, this impacts a women’s stance and weight distribution on her feet. In a shoe, that means a narrower heal, a roomier toe box, and contoured cushion for added stability.

I absolutely love the overall look of the Windswift LX, especially in comparison to their other running sneakers. Its structure and design rivals sneakers from competitors in the performance running space.

The colorways are bright and eye-catching, yet they also have the tried and true black and white options for those who like less spice on their feet. But for a pair that is fun and fast, you have that option. Ryka Windswift LX HeelThe tag on the sneakers lets you know that the sneakers are pre-treated with Ryka Shield stain resistance. Meaning, if you spill anything on your sneakers (or if you run on some dirt paths in the rain, like I did) you can simply run cold water over them as soon as you’re home, and the stain should wash away.

This worked well on my rainy run, where I picked up a bit of dirt and debris. I typically buy my own spray protectant for my sneakers, so this was a helpful feature.

With a breathable engineered mesh upper and reflective details on the sides and back, you can comfortably wear these sneakers in all kinds of conditions.

Quick Take

Pros

  • Even in the standard width, the toe box is roomy
  • The fit and overall feel is light and flexible
  • A multi-purpose sneaker for strides, long runs, and easy miles

Cons

  • Not a race day sneaker if you are more front of the pack

Ryka Windswift LX Fit

The spotlight for the new Windswift LX really shines in the thoughtful details. Rykä’s sneakers are built with a woman’s foot in mind from the very first stitch.

Ryka Windswift LX InstepMost notably, they include an anatomical Q-tech heel, which is fitted specifically for a woman’s quadricep muscle. It is narrower with extra padding, hugging the heel and preventing it from moving around.

I’m typically a big fan of heel locking all of my running sneakers, but I didn’t need to do that with these.

This sneaker also boasts a roomier forefoot area with ample toe box space. Even on my very hot, long runs where my feet and toes often swell, I found myself happily wiggling my toes around late in the run.

Ryka Windswift LX LacesAn 8 mm heel drop and a roomy toe box is hard to find in running sneakers, but these check both boxes.

These run true to size, and are not at all narrow. There is a wide version, but the regular fit toe box offered plenty of room. The tethered tongue hits at a good length, and the extra padding that it has makes tightening the laces a non issue.

Once laced up, my midfoot felt appropriately snug, secure, and comfortable. From the first run out the door, my feet felt immediately happy.

Ryka Windswift LX Feel

The Windswift LX Q:Foam used in this sneaker offers great impact absorption without feeling overly bouncy. Their 32 mm stack height hits that mid-to-max sweet spot for cushioning and leaves just enough ground feel while still offering plenty of absorption.

Ryka Windswift LX OutsoleIt also has 29% softer forefoot cushioning than previous Rykä running sneakers, which gives that additional support on long miles. The shoes struck a good balance here between support and flexibility and left my legs feeling very fresh at the end of long runs.

The sneaker is also incredibly light feeling, coming in at just under 8oz. The outsole is made from a high abrasion rubber that helps optimize traction without adding too much weight.

I wore this shoe for strides and interval workouts, and the shoe had great pickup ability. My strides felt slightly bouncy and very smooth.

The 8mm drop helps offer a bit of a roll off, especially as a moderate heel striker.

Ryka Windswift LX WearAnother design feature that might seem odd to call out, but it truly was one of the first things I noticed about this sneaker once they were in my hands, was the high-abrasion brush collar lining. It is incredibly buttery soft and engineered to be durable over time.

Similar Shoes to the Ryka Windswift LX

Our team has tested a ton of daily trainers. Here are a few similar ones:

  • Saucony Ride 19 – similar heel drop, stack height, and weight, but runs a bit narrower in the midfoot and forefoot
  • ON Cloudrunner 3 – similar heel drop and stack height, but a bit heavier with a tapered toe box
  • Mizuno Wave Rider 30 – similar heel drop, stack height, and weight, but additionally offers a full length Mizuno Wave Plate (a nylon plate)

These sneakers have undoubtedly found their way into my weekly rotation. I find myself reaching for them much more often than my previous favorite daily trainer, my Nike Vomero 18’s, because of their lightness and a more cushioned, high-stack feel. I do tend to reach for a plated sneaker on speed days, but I will begin incorporating these into some of those days to mix things up. This will easily become my new workhorse sneaker, and I do hope Rykä continues building upon this line.

Who Tried It?

Lindsay is the new kid to the gear testing team, but she’s ready to live up to the legends that have reviewed before her. She is in her 40s now, found running later in life (at age 35), and has run every distance from the 5K to the marathon. Unlike most runners, she actually enjoys treadmill miles, which are a requirement when you live through Maine winters. If she’s not running, she’s either walking her dog, exploring new places with her husband, or curled up with a good romantasy book.
