The New Balance SuperComp Elite v5 is a solid update that strikes the difficult blend of speed and comfort, but features stark changes that could prove a bit divisive.
New Balance loves to make a splash with each version of the SuperComp Elite, and this release is no different!
The SCE v5 (because seriously, can the name be any longer?) is lighter, leaner, and considerably faster than previous versions. The shoe features the FuelCell foam that New Balance fans have come to love, a stiffer carbon plate, and a fresh new upper.
It’s clearly intended for race day, and we’re already seeing a lot of them at the start lines. Let’s talk about why.
Who Is It Good For?
- Wide Feet: Negative. The fit is foot hugging, but the shoe is available in Wide!
- Heavier Runners: Yes. The midfoot is much more narrow and there is less foam volume, but the shoe still offers considerable cushion.
- Long Runs: Definitely. The smooth ride is perfect for longer efforts and races.
- Front of the Pack: Definitely designed with that faster gait in mind.
This shoe is comfortable, fast, and perfect for race day (half marathon and up)!
New Balance SuperComp Elite v5 Overview
The SCE v5 is a lightweight, race-ready supershoe built to deliver a fast, responsive ride. It pairs a full PEBA FuelCell midsole with an updated carbon plate for snappy energy return. It’s leaner than its predecessor, but still offers considerable cushion and comfort.
And as a certified shoe nut, I couldn’t wait to try them out.
After they landed on my doorstep, I did a quick side-by-side comparison with the Supercomp Elite v4, and was baffled how much volume New Balance shaved off the shoe.
It’s noticeably narrower and less bulky, so it may not land with those who need additional space and comfort. I’ll break down some key differences between the two shoes later in the review.
I put the SCE v5 through a variety of efforts, including relaxed, easy miles, a tempo run, track speedwork, and of course, multiple long runs. I’ve logged nearly 100 miles in the shoe, because frankly, I really enjoy them and am pumped to share my take-aways.
The stiffer carbon plate is absolutely designed for the front of the pack. You’ll notice that more of the supertrainer shoes or mid-pack shoes use the more flexible nylon. It’s really about foot strike and getting the most energy return out of the shoe in combination with the right foam.
What’s New in the SuperComp Elite v5
- The platform of the SCE v5 is 25% narrower
- It’s considerably lighter (.8oz Mens, 1.4 oz Womens)
- 8mm heel drop (up from 4mm)
- Stiffer carbon fiber plate
- Reduced foam volume
The SCE v5 is definitely a more aggressive shoe, leaning more into speed and responsiveness than cushion and additional space. But it does offer a smooth, comfortable ride, and it’s available in wide! So while it’s not a rinse, repeat of the SCEv4, fans of that shoe can definitely enjoy this update.

SuperComp Elite v5 Fit
The fit of the SCE v5 is dialed in, and kudos to New Balance for adding a few small features that will help keep your feet comfortable, even in the latter stages of races.
The heel is well cushioned and structured. It includes a new heel counter pad that will stave off any heel or achilles irritation. This is, by far, the cushiest part of the shoe, and will work particularly well for heel strikers.
The midsole is more firm, which is partially due to a slight reduction of foam volume in this shoe. It’s also relatively narrow, which works perfectly for me, as I don’t have the widest feet. But fear not, as the shoe is available in wide!
The tongue has a bit of cushion too, which helps create a secure, comfortable ride you don’t always get in race-day shoes. I did have the tongue slip under the lace line a couple of times, but it didn’t cause any discomfort.
Overall, the shoe feels locked in from heel to toe. Even on hot, humid runs, my foot never slipped around. It does run slightly snug, so if you’re racing in it, you might consider going up a half size.
SuperComp Elite v5 Feel
I love how this shoe feels. Easy miles flow well, and when you pick up the pace, it stays smooth and lively.
Somewhat similar to the Brooks Hyperion Elite 5, this shoe doesn’t have a pronounced rocker shape and boasts incredible ground feel. I really appreciate this feature, as the shoe is comfortable enough to walk around before or after your race.
Underfoot, the 100% PEBA FuelCell foam combines softness with real responsiveness, while the stiffer forefoot carbon plate adds pop without feeling harsh. It’s the absolute worst when a racing shoe turns into a rock in the back half of a race, and I’m thrilled to say that the SCE v5 feels just as great at the end of a run as it does near the beginning!
The 8mm drop gives it a slightly more aggressive stance, making it easy to lock into marathon pace and hold rhythm over the miles. It’s right at home in tempo runs, half-marathon efforts, and longer workouts.
The featherweight mesh upper wraps the foot securely without feeling restrictive. It’s sleek, but still really supportive. It’s not quite in the “barely-there” category some supershoes aim for, which could be a plus if you prefer a touch more structure.
The SCE v5 hits the sweet spot of speed and comfort, and is a fantastic option for your next marathon or half marathon!
Another standout feature is the outsole, consisting of a new rubber that keeps the shoe grippy, and well equipped to handle a rainy day or aid stations flooded by cups and electrolyte drinks.

- Hoka Cielo X1 2.0 – Ultra-bouncy with a more aggressive rocker and feel
- Nike Alphafly 3 – Springy and propulsive, more stable
Our Verdict
The price point makes this shoe a bit more than what the average runner needs, but we do like that it doesn’t have the big squishy feel of many carbon plated shoes, which means it’s more stable. However the heel needs some work and we’d love to see a women’s version.
