When a shoe gets a full redesign, it can go one of two ways: it either solves problems you didn’t realize you had or it overcomplicates a good thing. With the Salomon S/Lab Pulsar 4, Salomon clearly went all-in.

Salomon S-Lab Pulsar 4 Review From the higher stack height, updated foams, and a more structured upper, this version in many ways feels like a different shoe altogether. I was curious to see how these changes added up on real mountain terrain.

As a mountain runner, Salomon shoes have always been on my radar. But when I saw they’d collaborated with Swiss ski mountaineer and skyrunner Rémi Bonnet to create a racing shoe, I knew I had to give the Pulsar 4 a try.

I put this shoe through a few weeks of varied trail conditions – climbing, descending, fast intervals, and a few easy miles – and it surprised me more than once.

Some features made immediate sense. Others took a little getting used to. But what stood out most was how dialed this shoe felt when things got steep or technical. If charging technical descents is on your list for the year, look no further for a shoe that will help you meet your goals.

Who Is It Good For?

Who is the  Salomon S/Lab Pulsar 4 a good fit for? Let’s break it down with some common categories:
  • Wide Feet: Salomon typically runs narrow, but these feel extra narrow. No wide loads allowed.
  • Technical Trails: This shoe was designed for technical trails where good grip is needed. The snug fit means the shoe moves right with you so you know exactly where you’re stepping – or pushing off.
  • Long Runs: The high stack height and cushion makes this a great shoe for long days in the mountains.
  • Front of the Pack: Designed for high performance, this shoe is a great option for runners winning races and setting FKTs.

Salomon S/Lab Pulsar 4 Overview

I tested this shoe during a couple of full weeks of training runs. I could take it or leave it for easy runs, but really enjoyed it for on-trail speedwork, thanks to the bounciness provided by the dual-foam construction.

Salomon S-Lab Pulsar 4 CushionUnsurprisingly, where these shoes really shine is on technical terrain. The sticky rubber felt secure on rocky descents and the snug fit gave me total confidence over foot placements.

I really noticed this when I ran in my New Balance Fresh Foam Hierros the day after a test run in the Pulsar. Compared with the Hierro, in the Pulsar, my foot did not slide around at all – either inside the shoe or on rock slabs.

Salomon S-Lab Pulsar 4 BackSalomon invested in a lot of changes from the previous model, including a higher stack height and drop (previously 4mm), more structured upper to accommodate more variety in foot shapes, a wider toe box, and bouncier foams… and they really hit the jackpot!

Quick Take

Pros
  • Great for technical trails
  • Snug, secure fit
  • Light and bouncy cushion
Cons
  • Very narrow and no wide option
  • Only 1 color option
  • Not able to adjust lacing pattern

A quick note on style: The majority of my women’s running shoes and attire are pastels and cool colors. Only offering this unisex shoe in bright red/orange was certainly a choice by Salomon. I wish I could say I’ve been thoughtfully pairing it with black shorts… but I’ve been really leaning into the power clash.

Salomon S/Lab Pulsar 4 Pro Fit

This is a narrow shoe – typical of Salomon. Even with a slightly wider toe box than previous models, the Pulsar 4 still feels particularly snug, even on my already narrow feet.

Salomon S-Lab Pulsar 4 CollarThe sock-like upper hugs the foot and keeps the heel securely in place, allowing for  incredibly precise foot placement on technical terrain. That said, it takes a minute to put the shoe on, and the built-in insole leaves little room for customization. If you’re right on the edge of what this shoe can accommodate width-wise, orthotics may be a no-go.

The Quicklace system adds to the snug fit. In theory, it allows for quick adjustments on the go. In practice, I still had to stop entirely to re-tighten mid-run (though I’ll admit that could just be user error). The lack of adjustable lacing patterns may be a dealbreaker for runners who need more flexibility for things like heel locks or pressure relief. If you’re prone to numb toes, this might not be your match.

Salomon S-Lab Pulsar 4 HeelOn a positive note, the tongue is thoughtfully designed with an inward cut, which I really appreciated.  Unlike other shoes that have left me scraped and blistered when wearing low socks, these kept my ankles happy.

Salomon S/Lab Pulsar 4 Feel

Getting this shoe on takes some effort, but once it was tightened up, it felt like my feet were getting a supportive hug – snug, but not suffocating. The stack height feels higher than it is but unlike other shoes with a higher stack, the Pulsar felt incredibly stable. I was never concerned about rolling an ankle or sliding around inside the shoe.

Salomon S-Lab Pulsar 4 OverviewOther Salomon shoes I have run in have felt really stiff and heavy but – despite weighing more than previous models – these shoes felt light and bouncy, even just walking around my house.

I was pleased to see a higher-drop trail shoe, especially one designed for performance. At 6mm, I felt comfortable charging up hills and blasting through speed sessions without worrying about my achilles tendons.

Our Verdict

83%

When a shoe has grip this good and allows you to pick up the pace it’s going to get a high rating from us. However, the narrow fit and unisex sizing keep us from making it a go to trail shoe for everyone.
